Flip audio

Flip audio means time reverse here, not swapping left and right channels. Upload MP3 or WAV, play backwards, download WAV. Local processing.

Up to 60 seconds

“Flip audio” is a messy verb. Video editors flip a clip horizontally. Stereo utilities flip L and R. Mix engineers flip polarity. Casual users say flip when they want a file backwards. This page takes the last meaning: time reverse. It does not swap speakers, does not multiply samples by −1, and does not mirror a video frame.

If you needed a horizontal video flip, this is the wrong site. If you needed L/R swap, use a DAW or a stereo-utility plugin. If you needed polarity, phase invert audio online tells you to use a DAW Ø. If you needed backwards playback, stay.

Spanish flip / invertir confusion: inverter audio online. The novelty spelling of audio is oidua.

Time flip versus stereo flip

Time flip: index n → N-1-n on every channel independently. A guitar panned left remains left; its notes run last-first. A stereo delay that was “echo on the right later” becomes “echo on the right earlier,” still on the right.

Stereo flip: left samples move to the right channel and vice versa. Time still runs forward. A dialogue that was hard-panned stays speech-forward, just on the other speaker.

Doing both is a DAW chain. This page does only time.

A “flip stereo” search that landed here will not fix a podcast that was recorded with mics swapped. Reverse would make the swapped mics play backwards and still swapped.

Time flip versus polarity flip

Polarity flip (sometimes labeled Invert or Flip on a channel strip): x → -x. The kick looks upside down in the waveform view. It still hits at the same timecode. Two polarity-flipped copies cancel.

Time-flipped copies do not cancel with the original except at special symmetric signals. Do not use this editor to diagnose phase between two mics.

Reverse audio filter if you thought flip was an EQ.

Using the editor as a flip

Upload MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC, or record 60 seconds. Local decode. Play: the tail is now the head. Audio normal toggles the unflipped direction without a second file. Download is WAV of the flipped buffer.

Preview speed is not a “flip amount.” There is no 50% flip. Wet/dry would mean mixing forward and reversed copies; do that in a DAW.

Unflip a file you already saved: upload and reverse again (unreverse audio). Fades nibble the edges.

Stereo files, mid/side, and surround

Mid/side: this page does not decode M/S. If you upload an M/S WAV as if it were L/R, you will time-reverse M and S as though they were left and right, which is usually nonsense. Convert to L/R in a DAW first.

Surround / 5.1: the browser may downmix or refuse. Extract stereo or a specific pair, flip that.

Mono: one channel, time reverse. No L/R issue exists.

Phone and chat

Flip a Voice Memo the same way as any M4A. Flip does not mean rotate the phone. Speaker-left and speaker-right on a handset are not swapped by this process.

Checklist for the right operation

  • Want backwards speech or a cymbal swell → this page (time flip)
  • Want the guest on the other side of the headphones → channel swap in a DAW
  • Want a thin double to thicken → polarity in a DAW, A/B carefully
  • Want the picture mirrored → video editor

Once you know you wanted time, the rest is ordinary reverse: one file, WAV out, no server, speed for preview only. Flip twice and you are forward again, almost—keep the original if bits matter.

Hardware and mixer “flip” switches

Some analog mixers label a polarity toggle as Flip. Some DJ software labels a reverse-playback pad as Flip. Some camera gimbals flip the image. None of those devices send a message to this website. If your hardware Flip is polarity, this page will not mirror it. If your DJ pad is reverse, you already have reverse in the DJ software and do not need this tab unless you want a file export.

A channel-strip Flip that swaps two inputs (guest vs host) is routing. Reverse will not un-route them.

Waveform views

After a time flip, a DAW shows the transient at the other end of the region. After a polarity flip, the same transient sits at the same time, inverted around the zero line. If you screenshot the waveform from this browser, you may not get a detailed editor view at all—just a player. Judge by ear: last word first means time flip succeeded.

Do not crop the waveform in a screenshot and call it a polarity proof. Ears and a summing test (DAW) are the polarity proof.

Phone landscape “flip”

Rotating the phone does not flip audio. Landscape is a display orientation. The mic capsules do not swap in a way this editor would need to correct. If one AirPod is in the wrong ear, that is Bluetooth routing, not a file reverse.

When flip is the right word anyway

Use flip in a conversation with non-engineers: “flip the file so it plays backwards.” Then do this page. In a session with engineers, say “reverse the region” and “polarity invert the snare” so nobody hits the wrong control. This URL exists for the first audience and to warn the second.

Frequently asked questions

Does flip swap stereo left and right?

No. Left stays left. Each channel is reversed along time. If you need L/R swap, use a DAW channel-swap.

Is flip the same as reverse?

On this site, yes: time reverse. Other software uses flip for polarity or for stereo. Read the labels.

Is flip the same as phase invert?

No. Phase/polarity invert does not change time. See phase invert audio online.

What can I upload?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, AAC. Record up to 60 seconds. Output WAV. Work stays in the browser.

How do I unflip?

Normal mode if the buffer is still loaded. Otherwise reverse the flipped WAV again. Edge fades mean it is not bit-perfect.

Does flip invert the waveform visually upside down?

Not as a polarity flip. A DAW might draw the reversed file with attacks at the other end; that is time, not a vertical invert.
