Reverse audio filter

Plugin browsers and YouTube tutorials often say “add a reverse filter.” In everyday DAW slang, filter means any process in a chain. In signal processing, a filter is something like a low-pass: it shapes spectrum while time still runs forward.

This page is not an EQ, not a vocoder, not a formant filter, and not a “reverse EQ curve.” It is a time reverse of the entire file, the same idea as a stock Reverse plugin that rewrites the region, implemented in the browser.

If you came to cut hiss or to isolate a band, use EQ in a DAW. If you came to hear the tail first, you are in the right place.

Reverse versus filters you might have meant

EQ / IIR / FIR. Output at time t depends on nearby samples and coefficients. The drum hit still happens at the same moment; it just sounds darker or brighter. Reverse: the drum hit moves to a new moment.

Low-pass then reverse. Two steps. This site does not include the low-pass. You can EQ in a DAW, bounce, then reverse here, or reverse here then EQ. Order matters: reversing a filtered sound is not filtering a reversed sound.

Split-band reverse. High frequencies reversed, lows forward—an electronic-production trick. Needs crossovers. Not implemented.

Reverse reverb. Classic: reverse the vocal, add reverb, bounce, reverse again so the reverb swells into the word. This page can be the reverse stages if you bounce in between in another app. It will not host the reverb.

Polarity / phase filter. Not a filter either, but often adjacent in menus. Phase invert audio online. This reverse is time, not Ø.

Tape stop / rewind. A designed SFX, often reverse plus pitch plus noise. Rewind sound effect. Reverse sound for one-shots.

Flip. Time reverse on this site, not an L/R filter. Flip audio.

What the browser process actually is

Decode to PCM. Copy the buffer in reverse index order. Apply a short edge fade so the cut does not click. Play. Optional WAV encode for download.

No biquad coefficients. No Q. No “filter type” dropdown. If a UI mockup in a spam article showed a frequency knob on “AudioReverser,” that was invented.

Uploads: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, AAC. Mic: 60 seconds. Local: the “filter” does not run on a server farm.

Speed preview is a playback-rate change on the AudioBufferSource, not a printed time-stretch and not a filter sweep.

DAW reverse plugin versus this page

DAW plugin / region reverse:

• Can reverse a selected range on a long timeline
• Can sit in a chain with EQ and compression
• Can be bypassed without a second file
• Often non-destructive until bounce

This page:

• Whole file only
• No chain
• You download a new WAV
• Good when you are not in a DAW (phone, Chromebook, quick check)

Automation of a reverse “wet/dry” is a DAW thing (crossfade a reversed copy). This page is 100% reversed or, with Normal, 100% original direction. No blend slider.

Quality

Reverse does not add air. A thin MP3 stays thin (high-quality reverse). Calling reverse a “filter” does not make it a restorer.

Unreverse is reverse again, with edge-fade caveats (unreverse audio). Bypassing an EQ is lossless in a 32-bit DAW chain; this is not that.

Use reverse when you want time to run backwards. Use a real filter when you want spectrum to change. The names collided in search; the math did not.

Why DAW menus cause this search

Stock plugins are grouped under Filter, Distort, Modulation, Time. Reverse often sits under Time or under a miscellaneous “Reverse” audio suite. YouTube thumbnails still say “reverse filter on vocals.” Search copies the thumbnail language. Landing here with a frequency knob in mind is predictable and wrong.

Convolution “reverse IR” is another collision: people reverse an impulse response so a reverb runs backwards. You can reverse an IR WAV on this page, then load it into a convolution plugin. The page is not the convolver. The “filter” in that workflow is the IR plugin, not the reverse.

Wet/dry and automation (not here)

A filter sweep is often automated. Reverse of a whole file cannot be swept from 0% to 100% in this UI. To fade reverse in, duplicate the clip in a DAW, reverse one copy (or import our WAV), crossfade. That is the “filter mix” people remember from tutorials.

Sidechain: reverse does not have a detector input. If a tutorial “filtered reverse bass with the kick,” they used EQ or a filter plugin on a reversed region, not this website.

Practical test

Upload a sine sweep if you have one. Reverse: the sweep runs the other way in time. The spectrum at each moment is still a sine, not a low-pass. That is the demonstration that you did not apply an EQ filter.

Then go back to reversing the vocal you actually needed. Keep EQ in the DAW where it belongs.
