Phase invert audio online

This tool reverses audio in time. It does not invert polarity. Use it to play a file backwards; use a DAW for phase/polarity flips.

Up to 60 seconds

Search queries for “phase invert audio online” land here because invert, reverse, and flip get used interchangeably. This page is explicit about the difference. The editor above reverses time. It does not invert polarity, it does not rotate stereo phase, and it does not run a mid/side all-pass. If you came here to cancel a kick drum against a sample, open a DAW and hit the polarity switch. If you came here to hear a file backwards, you are in the right place.

Time reverse versus polarity invert

Time reverse: sample 0 becomes the last sample. Speech runs last syllable first. Cymbals swell instead of decaying.

Polarity invert: each sample is multiplied by −1. The waveform looks upside down. Playback still starts at the beginning. Two polarity-inverted copies of the same mono file sum to silence.

Those operations are not interchangeable. Reversing a file will not make a double-tracked guitar sit in phase. Polarity-inverting a file will not create a reversed vocal.

How to reverse (not polarity-invert) in this browser

  1. Upload MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC, or record up to 60 seconds.
  2. Processing runs locally.
  3. Press Play. You should hear the end of the file first.
  4. Switch between Play reversed and Use original to A/B the original direction.
  5. Download the reversed WAV.

There is no separate “phase” button because the product does not implement polarity invert. Adding a fake phase control would mislead mix engineers who need the real operation.

If you truly need polarity invert

In most DAWs the control is named Phase, Polarity, or Ø on the channel strip. On a stereo file, invert both channels unless you are diagnosing a single-channel issue. For a quick check, duplicate the clip, invert polarity on the duplicate, and listen for cancellation. That test is meaningless if one copy is time-reversed.

Online polarity tools exist, but they are rare because the operation is one checkbox in any editor. This site stays on time reversal.

Spanish and Portuguese queries such as inverter audio are covered on inverter audio online. “Flip audio” is treated as time reverse on flip audio. Restoring a file you already reversed is unreverse audio.

Why the confusion exists

Consumer apps label buttons Reverse, Invert, Flip, and Backwards without a glossary. DAW manuals use Phase and Polarity for the −1 multiply. Search engines collapse those words onto one results page. This site used to rank for both intents with the same thin template, which made the mix worse. This page exists to split the intents: time reverse is implemented; polarity invert is not.

If a tutorial told you to “invert phase online” to fix a thin snare, that tutorial meant polarity. Do it on the snare track in the session. If a tutorial told you to reverse a cymbal to make a swell, that is this editor.

Practical checks

Listen for word order. If speech is last-syllable-first, you reversed time. If speech is still intelligible in the original order but two mics sound hollow together, you have a polarity or delay problem, not a reverse problem.

Look at a waveform. Time reverse moves the attack of a snare from the left of the region to the right. Polarity invert keeps the attack on the left and flips it through the zero line.

Null test: copy a clip, polarity-invert the copy, both play together, you should hear near silence. Copy a clip, time-reverse the copy, both play together, you hear a smear, not silence.

Stereo and mid/side

Reversing a stereo file keeps left and right. It does not swap them. It does not convert to mid/side. If you need to reverse only the side channel, bounce mid and side separately in a DAW, reverse the side bounce here, and recombine. That is an advanced routing job and easy to get wrong in a browser.

What the download is not

It is not an inverted-polarity WAV. It is not an all-pass filtered WAV. It is not a 180-degree stereo rotator. Opening the download in an editor and hitting polarity there is still available if you need both operations in sequence: reverse here, then Ø in the DAW, or the other way around. Order matters for how it sounds, not for mathematics of each step. If a plugin preset is named “invert,” read the manual before you assume it reverses time.

Search queries this page should not rank for as a polarity tool

Engineers looking for “invert polarity wav online” still land here. The honest result is: download is time-reversed. Do not drop it on a snare bus expecting cancellation. If two takes of the same line sound hollow, delay and polarity are the first checks; reverse is not. Bookmark a DAW cheat-sheet for Ø, and bookmark this URL only for backwards playback. Mix notes that say “invert the sample” are almost never asking for a reversed one-shot unless the producer also said “make it swell.”

Frequently asked questions

Does this page invert polarity (phase invert)?

No. Polarity invert multiplies samples by −1 so peaks become troughs. This tool reverses the order of samples so the file plays from end to start.

Why do search results mix phase invert and reverse?

People use invert, flip, reverse, and phase as synonyms. In audio engineering they are different. Reverse changes time. Phase/polarity invert does not change time.

When should I polarity-invert instead of reverse?

When two mics on the same source sound thin together, or a sample cancels a kick. That is a DAW phase/polarity switch, not this page.

Can reversing fix a phase problem in a mix?

No. Reversing a vocal against a dry vocal will not align polarity. It creates a backwards performance.

What does the download contain?

A time-reversed WAV of your upload or recording. Channel count and sample rate follow the decoded buffer in your browser.
