MP3 reverser
Reverse MP3 audio locally, ignore ID3 tags, and download WAV. This page does not re-encode back to MP3.

MP3 is still the file people actually have: chat exports, old rips, email attachments, “audio.mp3” on a desktop. This page is the same local reverser as the rest of the site, written for that container. You upload an MP3 (or WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, AAC if that is what you have), the browser decodes it to PCM, the timeline is reversed, you preview, you download WAV. There is no MP3 encoder on the way out. That choice is deliberate.
What “reverse an MP3” actually does
An MP3 file is a pile of lossy frames plus optional ID3 metadata. The Web Audio API (or the browser’s media decoder behind it) turns those frames into a buffer of samples. Reversal walks that buffer from the last sample to the first. The MP3 bitstream is not “played backwards as frames.” You would get garbage if you reversed Huffman-coded frames without decoding. Decode first, reverse PCM second. That is why every honest in-browser MP3 reverser is really a PCM reverser with an MP3 decoder on the front.
Because decode already threw away whatever the MP3 encoder discarded in 1999 or 2024, reverse cannot invent air or cymbals that are gone. You will hear the same holes, now approaching from the other side of the bar.
Lossy artifacts you will notice more after reverse
MP3 encoders hide error where hearing is less sensitive. After a reverse, those errors sit in new places:
- Pre-echo on transients becomes a smear before the reversed hit, which can sound like a reverse cymbal even when you did not reverse a cymbal in the studio.
- Missing high-frequency noise floor makes reversed speech sound dull rather than “backwards but bright.”
- Joint-stereo decisions can make the stereo image wobble. The channels are still reversed independently in time; the wobble was baked in at encode.
- A hard crop at a frame boundary becomes a click at the opposite end of the file.
If those problems matter, start from WAV or FLAC instead. See reverse WAV online and FLAC reverser. If the only copy is MP3, reverse it anyway for a sketch or a joke, then recapture a cleaner source if you need to publish.
Why ID3 is ignored
ID3v1 and ID3v2 can hold title, album, artwork, unsynchronized lyrics, and even a tiny image. None of that is audio. The reverse engine does not parse tags, does not rewrite them, and does not embed them in the WAV. People assume “reverse MP3” will give them a tagged MP3 named the same as the input. That would require an MP3 encoder plus a tag copy step. We skip both so the output is a boring, widely compatible WAV.
If you needed the lyrics from the tag, open the original MP3 in a tag editor before you reverse. The reversed file will not recite them.
Why this site will not bounce back to MP3
A second MP3 encode is another lossy generation. You already paid the first generation when the file was made. Printing MP3 here would:
- Require picking a bitrate that is always wrong for someone.
- Encourage people to upload that new MP3 as if it were a master.
- Hide the fact that the working format after decode is PCM.
WAV is large. That is the trade. Phone editors, DAWs, and song ID apps all play WAV. If a chat app refuses WAV, convert on your device with an encoder you control, at a bitrate you choose. That conversion is your decision, not a silent extra pass on this origin.
M4A/AAC and OGG have the same story: decode, reverse, WAV out. Format-specific notes: reverse M4A, OGG reverser.
Steps
- Choose an MP3 you are allowed to use. This page does not pull YouTube. If the MP3 started as a stream rip, read YouTube audio reverser.
- Upload. Recording from the mic is capped at 60 seconds and is not an MP3 until you encode it later; the capture is a buffer, the download is still WAV.
- Wait for decode. A 320 kbps album track is heavier than a voice note.
- Play. Switch between Play reversed and Use original. If you uploaded a song that was already forwards, Play reversed is the effect; if you uploaded a prank that was already backwards, Play reversed should sound like the mix you remember.
- Preview at 0.5x–2x only to listen. The WAV duration matches the decoded file, not the preview rate.
- Download WAV. Store it next to the original MP3 so you can go back.
Nothing is uploaded to a server. Close the tab and the decoded buffer is gone.
What this page is not
Not a polarity inverter. Not a stem splitter. Not a song identification database. Not a batch folder walker. One file per visit.
Variable-bitrate files usually decode. Files with a video stream inside a misnamed .mp3 may fail; rename honestly or extract audio. DRM-wrapped files from stores will not decode in the browser.
Quality expectations
For a meme or a quick listen, MP3 is enough. For a release, get a lossless bounce and reverse that. Reversing does not upsample, does not reconstruct transients, and does not fix a 96 kbps encode from 2004.
If the reversed MP3 will be laid under picture, watch the edges. Encoders often pad a few silent granules. After reverse, that pad moves to the opposite end and can make the music late or early against picture. Trim in an editor.
Related lossless and Apple paths
If you still have the WAV from the same session, prefer it. If you have an iPhone memo, it is probably M4A, not MP3. If you have a CD rip in FLAC, use that. The MP3 reverser exists because the file in your Downloads folder is still, more often than not, an MP3.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the download WAV instead of MP3?
Re-encoding to MP3 would compress the file a second time and add another generation of loss. WAV keeps the decoded PCM so you can listen, edit, or run a song ID app without another lossy pass on this site.
Are ID3 tags preserved?
No. The decoder reads audio frames, not the tag block. Title, artwork, and lyrics in the MP3 header are discarded. Name your WAV yourself.
Will reverse remove MP3 compression artifacts?
No. Pre-echo, missing highs, and warble stay in the data. You hear them in reverse order. Use a lossless original if you still have one.
Can I reverse an MP3 I ripped from YouTube?
If you are allowed to use that file, upload it. This page does not accept a YouTube URL. See YouTube audio reverser for the file-based path.
Does the MP3 stay on your servers?
No. Decode and reverse run in the browser with the Web Audio API. We never receive the file.
Is VBR versus CBR a problem?
Usually not. The browser decodes the bitstream to PCM, then we reverse that PCM. Extreme corruption or a truncated last frame can click; re-export the MP3 if decode fails.
