How to reverse audio on Android

Reversing audio on Android is a browser job on this site: Chrome loads the page, Web Audio reverses the buffer on the phone, you download a WAV. Chrome, not the in-app WebView

Open the site in Chrome (or another full browser). WhatsApp’s internal browser, Instagram in-app browser, and many mail apps use a WebView with a weaker file picker. Uploads fail silently or the mic prompt never shows. Use the menu “Open in Chrome” when a chat link dumped you into a WebView.

Keep the tab visible while a file decodes. Android’s battery optimizations (Doze, Adaptive Battery, OEM killers on Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung) will suspend Chrome in the background. A suspended tab can drop an in-memory AudioBuffer. Plug in for large FLACs. Disable Battery Saver until download finishes.

Picking a file

Android’s picker is the Storage Access Framework. The clip must be in a folder the picker can see: Downloads, Recordings, WhatsApp/Media, or a folder you grant.

1. Export or copy the audio into one of those folders if it currently lives only inside an app’s private storage.
2. In Chrome, tap Upload and select the file.
3. Wait for decode. Do not switch to a game or a camera app.

Supported types: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, AAC. Android voice recorders often write M4A or WAV. WhatsApp voice notes are commonly OGG/Opus. 3GP and AMR from old recorders often fail; convert to WAV or MP3 in a file manager, then retry.

Scoped storage on modern Android means “the file is on my phone” is not enough if it sits in an app sandbox. Use that app’s Share → Save to Files / Downloads, then pick from Downloads.

WhatsApp OGG on Android

Long-press the voice note → Share or the three-dot save path, depending on WhatsApp version. Save to Downloads or to Files. The result is often .ogg. Upload that file here. Do not paste a https:// WhatsApp link; this site does not fetch URLs.

If WhatsApp only offers “forward to a contact,” forward to yourself, then save from that chat, or use a file explorer that indexes WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes. Those folders are sometimes hidden until you enable hidden items.

Telegram and Discord exports are similar in spirit: save the attachment, then upload. Each messenger’s container can differ (OGG, MP3, M4A).

Microphone on Android

Record asks for the mic through Chrome. Allow in the prompt. If you denied it, Chrome menu → Settings → Site settings → Microphone, or the lock icon → Permissions.

Work profiles (company phones) can block the mic for unmanaged sites. Upload a file recorded in the work-approved recorder instead.

Stay in the tab until Stop. A 60-second cap applies. Incoming phone calls will interrupt getUserMedia; start again after the call.

Bluetooth headsets may sample at a narrow band. Reverse will not invent highs. The bottom built-in mic is usually clearer for a spoken reverse.

Do not record with the reversed preview playing on the loudspeaker; the mic will capture it and you will reverse a reverse plus room.

Battery, heat, and memory

Decoding FLAC or a long MP3 allocates a full PCM buffer. On a 3 GB phone that can fail. Split the file or use a shorter clip. Heat is normal during decode; it is the CPU, not an upload.

Chrome download: the WAV lands in Downloads or in a folder you pick. Some OEMs put a “Downloads” app separate from Files; search .wav if you cannot see it.

Preview speed is not printed into the file. There is no pitch shift and no translation.

What Android will not do here

• Reverse while the screen is off and Chrome is killed.
• Batch a whole album in one picker tap (you can select one file per pass; true batch is a desktop topic).
• Install as a Play Store update. Add to Home screen from Chrome is a shortcut to the website, optional.

Keep the original OGG or M4A. The WAV is the reversed copy. Reverse again to restore word order. Confirm the file in Downloads before you delete the chat attachment.

Android OEMs rename Files, My Files, and Downloads. If the WAV seems to vanish, search the device for .wav sorted by date. Some skins scan slowly; wait a few seconds before assuming the export failed. Do not upload the reversed file to a random “converter” site just to get MP3; use a local encoder if a chat app rejects WAV.
