How to reverse audio on a PC

On a Windows PC, reverse audio in Chrome or Edge: pick a file from a folder, wait for the local Web Audio decode, preview backwards, download WAV. Nothing is installed from this domain. Nothing is posted to a server. You can also record up to 60 seconds if the browser may use the microphone.

Audacity can reverse too. It is a free editor with Effect → Reverse (and a selection-based workflow). It is not a partner, not bundled, and not required. Use Audacity when you need a region, a chain of effects, or a folder of files. Use this page when you want one clip reversed in the browser.

Chrome and Edge on Windows

Edge is Chromium; behavior matches Chrome for decode and mic. Allow the microphone from the padlock if you record. Controlled-folder / Smart App Control does not block in-tab PCM, but it can block a download into a protected folder; pick Downloads or Desktop if save fails.

Firefox is acceptable. The old Internet Explorer engine is not. In-app Edge WebViews inside Teams or Outlook can break the file picker; open the site in a full browser window.

Hardware acceleration off/on rarely matters for reverse. RAM does. A 24-bit 96 kHz stereo WAV of a concert will allocate a large ArrayBuffer. Task Manager → the browser process will grow. If Windows then kills the tab, shorten the file.

HTTPS only for the mic. A pasted file:///C:/Users/... in the address bar is not how you load audio into this editor. Use Upload.

File paths and the picker

Windows users often think they must paste C:\Users\Name\Music\track.mp3. This page has no path text box and no URL fetch. The picker reads the bytes. OneDrive placeholders must be hydrated (green check) or the decode fails on a cloud stub.

NTFS permissions: if the file is in another user’s profile, the picker cannot open it. Copy to your Music or Downloads folder.

Extensions: .mp3 .wav .flac .ogg .m4a .aac are expected. .wma and .cda are not. Rip or convert those first. Double extensions (.mp3.txt) mean it is not audio.

Drag from File Explorer into the page works in Chrome/Edge when the drop target is the file input. Dragging onto the desktop shortcut of the browser only opens a tab, it does not attach the file.

Audacity reverse versus this page

In Audacity (current 3.x): select the audio, Effect → Reverse, export WAV or MP3. You can reverse a selection so a verse flips and the chorus does not. You can use Macros/Chains on a folder. That is why people keep Audacity around.

This page:

• Reverses the whole decoded buffer.
• Exports WAV only.
• Does not install codecs.
• Does not keep a project .aup3.

Audacity is not affiliated. Screenshots on the web that mix this site’s name with Audacity’s UI are mashups. If you already have Audacity open, you do not need this tab unless you prefer not to export from Audacity yet and only want a quick listen.

Recording on a PC

Click Record, allow the mic, stop before 60 seconds. Windows microphone privacy: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → let desktop apps / Edge / Chrome access the mic. A muted mixer channel in Windows volume mixer will record silence; unmute.

USB interfaces: pick the default input in Windows sound settings before recording. Exclusive mode on an interface can block the browser; disable exclusive mode for that device if getUserMedia fails.

Speakers plus an open mic will reverse room bleed. Use headphones.

After download

Edge and Chrome save to the Downloads folder unless you ask each time (browser setting). The file is WAV. Import into Premiere, DaVinci, or a game engine as needed. This site does not reverse video.

Controlled folder access (Windows Security) may prompt on first save. Allow the browser.

Preview speed is not baked in. Pitch is unchanged. Reverse again to restore order; keep the original on disk because edge fades make a round trip imperfect.

What the PC browser path will not do

• Read a path or URL you paste.
• Pitch-shift, translate, or identify a song.
• Reverse one region inside a file (trim in an editor or Audacity first).
• Survive a closed tab without a download.
