Reverse music search
Hear a reversed song the right way around, then ID it with a lyric or a song app. Reversal stays in your browser.

A reversed song is a different listening problem than a reversed voice note. You are trying to name a commercial recording that someone flipped, sampled backwards, or posted as a challenge. This page is the restore step. It is not a catalogue. It will not print an artist name. You reverse the timeline in the browser, listen for a hook, and then you identify the track the same way you would identify any other mystery song: a lyric typed into a search box, a song ID app held up to the speakers, or a hummed query of the forward melody.
People mix three jobs into one query. Job one is “make this file play forwards.” Job two is “what song is this.” Job three is “generate a backwards version of a song I already know.” Only job one runs here. Job two belongs to fingerprint apps and lyric search. Job three is an edit you can still do on this page once you already have the file; see backwards song generator for that intent.
Humming versus reverse-then-identify
Humming search (the feature in some ID apps) asks you to sing or hum the tune as you remember it. The engine looks for a melody contour. That works when you heard the track forwards and can reproduce the contour. It fails when the only source you have is a reversed file, because you are humming the contour backwards, or you are humming pitches in an order that never existed in the catalogue.
The more reliable path for a file that already sounds reversed:
- Upload the clip (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC) or record up to 60 seconds from the room.
- Let the Web Audio API decode and reverse sample order on your device. Nothing is sent to a matching server.
- Play the result. Switch between Play reversed and Use original until one direction sounds like a real mix.
- Find a sung chorus or a repeating hook, not only a pad.
- Play that window next to a song ID app, or write down a lyric and search it. Hum only after you can hear the forward melody.
Preview speed from 0.5x to 2x can help you catch words in a fast rap or scan a long intro. Speed is not written into the WAV. Print a speed change in a DAW if you need a permanent tempo shift.
Hooks, choruses, and instrumental beds
Fingerprint systems like a few clean seconds of the mix people hear on the radio. After you restore direction, aim the phone at:
- The chorus, especially the first line people sing along with.
- A pre-chorus that contains a unique lyric.
- A riff that is the song’s identity (guitar or synth), if there is no vocal.
Aim away from:
- Long ambient beds with no harmonic motion.
- Crowd noise over a festival bootleg.
- A voiceover that covers the music.
- A one-bar loop that could belong to a thousand tracks.
Reversed cymbals and reversed reverb are common production tricks inside a forward song. Those tricks do not mean the whole file is reversed. If the vocal is intelligible, you probably do not need this page. If every syllable is backwards, you do.
Where reversed songs come from
Short-video apps reward backwards audio as a gag. Editors bounce a reversed stem and forget to bounce a dry copy. Game puzzles ship a reversed chorus. Someone rips a stream, reverses it, and asks a group chat to name it. In all of those cases you need the original word order before a catalogue match is likely.
If the audio came from a video site, extract it yourself first. This page does not accept a video URL. The YouTube audio reverser page states that limit and the file-based workaround.
Limits that affect music ID
Recording from the microphone captures the room, the phone speaker, and a 60-second cap. That is enough for a hook test, not for an album. Prefer a file upload when you have one.
The download is WAV. Tags from the MP3 (ID3) are not copied. You will not get a title from metadata if the uploader named the file “audio.mp3.”
The engine reverses time. It does not invert polarity, and it does not separate vocals from the bed. If you need stems, use a stem splitter elsewhere, then reverse a stem here if you want.
Very large lossless files can stall on older phones. If the tab freezes, try a shorter crop or a desktop browser.
After you think you know the song
Confirm with a second source: lyrics site, official audio, or a credit list. Misheard reversed syllables are common. One wrong word in a Google query sends you to the wrong decade.
If your goal was singing practice in reverse, reverse singing website is the better cluster. If your goal was the general restore-then-search pattern, start at reverse audio search. If you thought Google could match the waveform the way it matches a photo, read Google reverse audio search.
Rights
Naming a track does not license it. Reversing a file you do not own does not create a new license. Use recordings you have rights to when you publish the result.
Checklist
- File plays backwards → reverse here → ID app or lyric.
- File already plays forwards → skip reverse → ID app or lyric or hum.
- You already know the song and want it backwards → reverse here and download WAV.
- You want the site to print the title → it will not. There is no music search engine on this origin.
That is the whole product: local timeline reverse, preview, WAV out. The search part of “reverse music search” happens after you leave this tab.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hum the backwards clip into a song ID app?
Humming works on the melody you remember in forward time. If the file itself is reversed, restore it here first, then hum or play the restored hook. Humming the backwards pitches in reverse order rarely matches a catalogue.
Why did Shazam fail on my meme song?
Most catalogues store forward mixes. A reversed export has a different time structure, so the fingerprint misses. Reverse the file on this page, play the WAV, and try the app again.
Does this site tell me the track title?
No. There is no music database here. You get a time-reversed preview and a WAV download. Naming the song happens in a lyric search or a separate ID app.
Which part of a song IDs best after reverse?
A chorus or a sung hook with lyrics. Long instrumental beds and pads are harder. Intros that are only drums can match if they are distinctive, but a vocal chorus is the safer window.
Can I search by pasting a YouTube music link?
No. Save audio you are allowed to use, then upload MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC. The page does not fetch streams.
Will reversing twice give me the commercial master?
No. Two reverses restore the direction of *your* file, including whatever compression and crop it already had. It does not fetch a studio master.
