Reverse voice search

Unknown speech may be reversed. Restore direction in your browser, then transcribe. This is not speaker identification.

or

Up to 60 seconds

“Reverse voice search” is what people type when they have a talking clip they cannot understand and they suspect the clip was flipped. The suspicion is sometimes right: prank voice notes, puzzle audio, reversed ad-libs in a beat. It is sometimes wrong: mumbling, heavy reverb, a language they do not speak, or a bad phone speaker. This page handles only the first problem. It puts the samples in reverse order so a human can attempt a transcript. It does not identify the speaker, it does not search a government or social graph, and it does not caption the file for you.

Treat the workflow as restore, then write. The restore happens here. The writing happens in your notes app, a caption tool, or your ears.

Speech is not a song ID problem

Music ID apps compare mixes to commercial catalogues. A private voice memo is not in those catalogues. Holding Shazam to a reversed voicemail will not return a name. Even after you restore direction, a fingerprint app is the wrong tool unless the “speech” is actually a sung chorus.

For talking audio, the useful outputs are:

  • A transcript (even a messy one).
  • Unusual words you can type into a web search.
  • A decision that the clip was never reversed.

That is closer to reverse audio search than to a music workflow, but the listening tactics differ. Sibilants and breath noise mark word edges. Names and digits survive reverse better than grammar. A full sentence at 1x is often opaque; a slower preview helps you catch pieces.

Restore direction in the browser

Upload a memo or a chat export: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC are accepted. iPhone Voice Memos are often M4A; Android chat notes are often OGG or OPUS inside an OGG wrapper. If the decoder rejects a file, bounce to WAV on the device and retry.

Alternatively, record up to 60 seconds with the on-page microphone. Use that when someone is playing the mystery clip in the room and you do not have the file. Room echo will reverse into a swell, which smears consonants, so a file export is cleaner when you can get one.

Processing never leaves the machine. There is no matching backend. You are not submitting a voiceprint.

Play the result. Switch between Play reversed and Use original to compare. If Use original is already a sentence you can follow, stop. Reversing clear speech makes a transcript harder.

Preview speeds from 0.5x to 2x exist so you can babysit difficult syllables. They are not baked into the download. The WAV is the reversed (or, if you toggled back, original-direction) timeline at the decoded sample rate.

How to transcribe after restore

Listen once for gist, then again for words. Write in short bursts. Replay a one-second window rather than looping the whole minute. Drop to 0.75x or 0.5x on clusters of consonants.

Do not expect cinematic “secret message” clarity. If the talker recorded forwards and someone reversed the file, you should hear ordinary language. If the talker tried to speak backwards live, you will hear strained phonemes that never were English (or any other language) in reverse. Live backwards speech is a performance; a reversed forward take is just a tape trick.

When you have a line, search the line. That is text search, not voice search. It can find a meme, a quote, or a news clip. It will not find the talker’s home address, and this site will not try.

What this is not

Not speaker identification. Two people can share a pitch range. A voiceprint product is a different category with different consent rules. We do not offer it.

Not a voice reverser marketing alias only: that page is about creating reversed speech on purpose. This page is about unknown clips that may already be reversed. The engine is the same; the intent is diagnostic.

Not a translator. Reversal does not map Spanish to English. After you have a transcript, use whatever translation tool you trust. The reverse voice translator page spells out that split.

Not a generator of nonsense words. If you want to create reversed phrases for a game, reverse speech generator matches that intent. Here the source is unknown.

Not polarity invert. Upside-down samples still play in the same time order. Unintelligible speech is almost never a polarity problem.

Not a YouTube URL decoder. Export audio first.

Memo-specific paths

iPhone users often start from the Voice Memos app. Export or share the M4A, then upload. A dedicated walkthrough lives at reverse voice memo.

Chat apps wrap speech in compressed codecs. Compression plus reverse exaggerates “swish” on sibilants. That artifact is in the source, not a bug in the reverser. If you need a cleaner transcript, ask for a re-record in a quiet room.

After the WAV download

Import the WAV into a caption app if you want timestamps. Keep the original file; a second reverse of the WAV should restore word order, with a short edge fade that is not bit-identical to the first original.

If the transcript is the end goal, you can delete the WAV when you are done. Nothing remains on a server because nothing was sent.

If you still cannot parse the clip, the cause is probably noise, overlap, or a language you do not know—not a missing Google voice fingerprint. Say so plainly: this origin will not “search” a throat. It will only flip time so your ears get a fair chance.

Frequently asked questions

Can this page tell me who is speaking?

No. There is no speaker-ID model and no voiceprint database. You reverse the timeline so you can hear the words. Naming the person is your own knowledge or a separate product.

Should I run speech-to-text on the reversed file?

Not until direction is restored. Automatic captions fail on backwards syllables. Reverse here, download the WAV, then caption the forward file in an app that transcribes.

Is this a translator?

No. Reversing does not convert languages. If the restored speech is in a language you do not read, use a translator on the transcript. See reverse voice translator for that distinction.

How long can I capture from the microphone?

Sixty seconds. For a longer memo, export the recording from Voice Memos or your chat app and upload MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, or AAC.

Will my voice note be uploaded for matching?

No. Decode and reverse run in the tab with the Web Audio API. Close the tab to drop the buffer.

What if the memo was never reversed?

Toggle Normal. If the speech is already intelligible, do not reverse it for ‘search.’ Transcribe the original instead.
